One of their most important duties performed by the Safety Patrol at Oak Hill Elementary School is the raising of the American Flag in the morning and lowering it at the end of every school day. The emphasis that the Oak Hill staff places on the importance of the American flag as well as the Safety Patrol's diligent and proper display of the American flag deserves recognition.

On 17 Feb 10, Fairfax Resolves President Jack Sweeney, supported by Chapter Color Guard members Larry McKinley, Dan Rolph, and Darrin Schmidt, presented the school staff with SAR Flag Certificates. Those awarded included School Principal Dr. Amy Goodloe and Assistant Principal Phyllis Sledge in recognition of their emphasis on teaching the importance of displaying the American Flag. Also recognized were the teacher Safety Patrol leaders, Elizabeth Price and Ernie Herring. The four Safety Patrol Captains were also awarded SAR Good Citizenship certificates and pins for their daily flag duties.

Chapter President Jack Sweeney presents Lieutenant Matthew P. Malof with the VASSAR award and a check for $500

Members of the Fairfax Resolves Chapter assembled on March 25, 2010 to present Lieutenant Matthew P. Malof, the Chapter's 2009-2010 EMS Commendation Medal winner, with a check for $500. The additional recognition came as part of the VASSAR program for recognizing outstanding emergency medical service support in the community.

The ceremony was conducted on-site at Lt. Malof's own Fire Station #5 where a broad segment of his fellow firefighters and EMS members were able to observe the recognition. Fairfax County Fire Chief Ronald L. Mastin was on hand to express his appreciation of the Fairfax Resolves Chapter's consistent partnership with the Fire Department in its awards program.

Of particular note, Lt. Malof, had done research on the SAR and was able to explain the significance of the SAR and how it and it's members are a patriotic organization comprised of descendants of some of the Nation's true "First Responders", those who made the establishment of our great Nation possible. It was a very insightful and emotionally moving speech, and all appreciated the insights. Chief Mastin was clearly impressed with the entire event which was followed by cake and refreshments provided by the Fire Station.
