A Message from the Chapter President....

December 15, 2020

Dave Cook, Chapter President

Greetings Compatriots!

Welcome to the website of the Fairfax Resolves Chapter of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution. The Fairfax Resolves Chapter was formed in in 1979 with its first officers being installed in the Historic Fairfax County Courthouse on the 25th of October. The membership at that time consisted of 20 charter members and three associate members.

The name Fairfax Resolves, was selected for as the chapter’s name to honor the actions of the citizens of Fairfax County and the great resolutions that they unanimously approved at a public meeting chaired by George Washington at the Court House in the town of Alexandria on 18 July 1774. The Fairfax Resolutions, known today as the Fairfax Resolves, was the strongest documented stand against British oppression to be formally and officially stated by a group of citizens up to that time.

This year we will be celebrating our 42nd year. Our chapter has grown to over 170 members. The chapter covers western Fairfax and Loudoun Counties with about half of our membership located in each county.

This past year and for the third year, we were recognized as the Best Large Chapter in the Nation. This year we were presented with the President General’s Cup (overall best chapter), The Liberty Bell Americanism Award (best chapter for Americanism activities) and the President General Activities Award (best chapter for the President General’s activities).

This past year we all faced difficult challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of numerous SAR events and meetings. This of course, included the cancellation of the SAR National Congress in Richmond. This chapter found ways to overcome many of these challenges. The technical expertise and vision of our members enabled us to hold our Patriot’s Day event normally held at Arlington National Cemetery remotely by using Zoom technology. We were the first SAR chapter in the nation to hold a virtual event. Our remaining events, Wayne’s Crossing and commemoration of the signing of the Fairfax Resolves became hybrid events with a small number of members being present on site and the rest of us participating via Zoom. Our chapter meetings too became hybrid events.

Deliveries of the Covid-19 vaccine is begun. Even so, we anticipate many months will pass before things begin to approach normalcy. Even so, we will continue the work of the SAR.

The Fairfax Resolves Chapter is a large and active chapter. We count among our membership many current and former high-ranking military, government, business and non-profit leaders. All our members are dedicated to advancing the purposes of the SAR.

Our regular monthly meetings are held September through May. The pandemic precludes our ability to meet in the normally diverse set of venues, such as The Mount Vernon Inn, and the Historic Fairfax Courthouse. Even so, we will strive via hybrid meetings to feature a prominent speaker in a field related to the American Revolution, U.S. History and other key issues of the day.

If you are already a member of the SAR and would like to join the Fairfax Resolves Chapter, please contact our Secretary. If you are not a member of the SAR and would like more information about joining the SAR and the Fairfax Resolves Chapter, please click on our Membership page or contact our Registrar. Membership is open to any male who is a lineal descendant of a Revolutionary War soldier or patriot. Males below the age of 18 may become junior members. Women interested in joining should contact the Daughters of the American Revolution. Children may also contact the Children of the American Revolution.

Thank you for your interest in the Fairfax Resolves Chapter. I am honored to serve as this year’s Chapter President and hope you will join us in the important work of the SAR as we honor our patriot ancestors by promoting our Nation’s history and founding principles.

Sincererly,

Dave Cook
